Mysterious and enchanting, Kitsune are fox-spirits known across myth and legend for their cunning charm, magical abilities, and ever-shifting forms. Native to ancient forests, spirit realms, or hidden enclaves, Kitsune walk the line between the mortal and the mystical, often blending seamlessly into the societies of others—until they choose not to.
Though often mistaken for simple tricksters, Kitsune possess deep wisdom and powerful arcane gifts, many of which grow with age. Most Kitsune begin life with a single tail, but as they develop their talents and experience, additional tails sprout—each a symbol of spiritual growth and magical mastery, up to a legendary ninth tail.
Kitsune are shapeshifters by nature, able to slip between a humanoid form and a lithe fox body with ease. Many use this gift for stealth, scouting, or evasion—others simply for the joy of mischief. Their magic tends to center around illusion, charm, and teleportation, enhancing their reputation as elusive and captivating beings.
Despite their otherworldly origins, Kitsune can be found across many lands: as wandering performers, clever merchants, enigmatic sages, or cunning spies. Whether they act out of whimsy, curiosity, or deeper purpose, one thing is certain—when a Kitsune crosses your path, little is ever what it seems.
Fox Form.
As an action, you can transform into a Small fox. While in fox form, you retain your mental ability scores but cannot cast spells, use weapons, or wear armor. Your movement speed becomes 40 feet, and you gain advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks. You can remain in this form for up to 1 hour. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus and regain all uses after a long rest.
Kitsune Magic.
You know the Minor Illusion cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Disguise Self spell once per long rest. At 5th level, you can cast the Misty Step spell once per long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
Keen Senses.
You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Fey Ancestry.
You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Nine-Tailed Legacy.
As you grow in power, your tails begin to multiply, each representing a fragment of your magical potential. For every two character levels (rounded down), you gain an additional tail, up to a maximum of nine. The number of tails has no mechanical impact but serves as a roleplaying feature to reflect your growing mastery of Kitsune magic.
You may choose this feat at level 4 or later if your DM allows feats.
Prerequisite: Kitsune race.
