Am I really taking a break, or just focusing on WorldEmber? Hahahaha yeah, WE for the win.
I have my first article *almost* done. I didn't quite get the artwork finished, so placeholder art is sitting pretty. It's about Clear Rays, a powerful spell Vantra uses in the Evenacht. This one article has me at 21% of WE finished. Heh, I guess 10K will fly by.
I'm also working on Fyrij's Day. Haven't decided if it will be a character or a prose article. I'm doing a text/art combo, inspired by what I did for Spooktober. Here's a peek at the art. Yep, Kjaelle is not happy with our death-faking little caroling.

I've added a third ongoing story to my Augmented Valor world. I posted the first chapter. The new series is about a Latvian woman on an early cryostasis ark colony ship. She wakes up from cryo-sleep on a Mars Federation Navy Search and Rescue ship nearly 500 years later.

So I've been thinking of Greenglimmer. It's not that I ended the book too soon, because I felt that it needed to finish at that point. But I decided I don't want to start Windtwist Islands with an extended Greenglimmer adventure.
So I'll be publishing an intermediate story about clearing Kjiven's Touch from the sacred Bendebares grove. It'll be along a novelette, or even novella, size, and go live sometime between now and January 9. Not sure when (cause I'm still writing it!).

I've been busily adding my cyberpunk noir science fiction world here on WA. The Red Dragons are the largest criminal syndicate on Chendiuria. Aditi "Adi" Nizhóní Peshlakai , my former Colonial Fleet Marine Myrmidon MC, has delt with the Red Dragons in the past.
I'm looking forward to WorldEmber 2025 and plan to focus on geography. I've got quite a list of articles I want to write.
I'm doing really well with NovelEmber. I am currently at 31,742 words, and I am contemplating perhaps increasing the challenge to 100k words if I can figure out how to do that on PWA.
For the foreseeable future, I am posting a chapter each Sunday. I am alternating between two stories set in my Augmented Valor world. One story features Adi and Shadows of Eros; the other story takes place about 70 years before Adi's time.

Yep, I've been writing about Lapis and her assortment of friends, family and enemies for five years. It doesn't seem that long, but I've serialized four books at Manuscripts and just started Re-caast, the fifth. This journey into serialized fantasy would not have taken place without World Anvil. Thank you for giving me a writing home.
I'm hoping, barring more unforeseen wtf, to get some nice artwork up in the next few months, and maybe a story or two. There are a couple I have in mind, I just need time to create it all.
And I might have some free time coming up because...
Greenglimmer is ending next week! That's right, the second book of the Evenacht serialized novels is coming to an end. But never fear! Book 3, Windtwist Isles, will go live January 9, 2026, same bi-weekly time, and free to read at Manuscripts.
More adventure and mayhem await Vantra and the mini-Joyful as they arrive in the Windtwist Isles, which are as much known for their harsh, unpredictable winds as their sparkling sandy beaches. Laken's next essence is there--at the bottom of a gigantic ocean whirlpool. How are they going to reach it without being torn apart? Can they retrieve it before the enemy does?

Lapis has no idea what to feel, now that the Dentherion Empire's influence in Jilvayna has come to an abrupt end. Midir also has an offer she cannot refuse.
It's been a ride, all! Here ends the Jilvayna Chronicles arc of Lapis of Nicodem. We'll start Re-cast, the first book in the Chaser Chronicles, sometime in September. Lapis and Patch join the new government, the Wolf Collaborate, as chasers, and their stakes will be those who escaped justice for the ills they wrought on Jilvayna, as well as discovering what, exactly, Mesaalle Kez wants.
And, as with all chapters of this serial, the next book will continue to be FREE to read here at Manuscripts, our wonderful World Anvil writing platform.

Wow, y'all! After the next installment, Broken Dulcet is done--but Lapis's adventures are not over. They continue in Re-cast, where a chaser's job is never done, especially in service to a new leadership rising from the ashes of the old.
I didn't think it would be this quick, but the characters had other ideas :) Expect Re-cast to start sometime in September, giving me a chance to get the cover and such done (I mean, I'm in the middle of Summer Camp, then I'll be judging, and I have a WIP coming out in October. I need a bit of time!).
Thanks to all the readers of Lapis's adventures so far. Because of you, I continue to write. Seriously. I know there are people out there who enjoy her story, and that keeps me going through all my creative endeavors.

How's everyone's summer camp going? I've written articles, but they need a bit of CSS before publishing. So far I have something on Qira's Stink Smell, the Meint Clinics, and the city of Evening, with plans to write about Flame martial artists who were also dragonpriests, Rakan noodles, and a haunted building. There are a few prompts this time I'm like ¯\(o_o)/¯ but I'll come up with something (symbiotic relationship, eh?).
I hope I can get my CSS on and publish something before tomorrow, but I always get behind during Summer Camp and rush in the last week to get articles completed.
I've decided to dedicate this Summer Camp to my father, who is slowly slipping away and may not make it past July (we'll see). It's a mixed bag of feelings, and we'll see how much of that makes it into my articles (it's definitely made it into my serials).

Then on to the next big story arc in the series. Re-cast (working title) begins The Chaser Chronicles, where Lapis gets to chase bigger stakes for a bigger cause.
I'll probably redesign the first four book covers too, but that will happen after I get more promised artwork out there.

I've no new artwork for this week. I've been trying to get Abyss of Dreams cover done. It's been hard, because I want something that looks current so it will sell, but after looking at popular releases, I'm still not sure what that might be (especially since it's epic dark fantasy, and not romantasy). I'm probably going to go with a sweeping landscape with tiny figures, coinciding with the epicness of the plot.
And I'm now enchanted with the possibility of using Gaea for map purposes. We'll see if I stick to my original idea, or go with that.

Well, I needed a break from sketching khentauree, because my drawings are not what I want. Feeling discouraged, I decided to draw a scene with a city in the background, something that still terrifies me because I don't think I draw buildings all that well.
Anyway, this is what I did.

Devour is a dark Science Fiction novel about a group of interstellar travelers that get lost in an unknown part of the universe, but find a pocket of human civilization nonetheless. As they investigate this culture and try and find a way back home, they realize that what is a Utopia on the surface is a nightmarish hellscape controlled by forces beyond their wildest dreams.

My father was supposed to have a quick procedure done earlier this week. Instead the surgery went wrong. While it didn't go as wrong as the doctors originally thought, he's still not in great shape. Worry made being creative a struggle. I finished the chapter (yay!), but it changed a lot from what I had in mind because I realized I couldn't write it that way.
Yeah, it's interesting how things outside artistic and writing processes can drastically influence them. Because of that, I don't have much more to add than my Rituals of Renewal article. I had planned a bit more, but that will need to wait for a later update.
Check out the Dance of Flame. It's part of the history of Likeda, one of the habitations where my upcoming book, Abyss of Dreams, takes place.

Rushing to catch up on all the art stuff I need to get done this month. Here's a peek at what I've been working on for the Abyss of Dreams release. It's a composite of several snowy mountain photos and three different skies, and while I like the dreamlike quality, I'm not quite happy with it. The left peak is Kiune, the right Majari, and deep within the earth below them rests a dragon's lair. I'm creating quotes and working on the map (which is not going as easy as I wish it would).

I'm looking for heightmap/terrain generator software. I'm not as concerned about price as I am about quality (though I can't afford something like Houdini. I keep thinking 2D art apps are spendy but 3D has them beat). I've read about several, including Gaea, Blender, Terragen, World Machine, World Creator, etc etc. Anyone have a program they use and like?

Other than that, I've been wondering how I'm going to handle both Greenglimmer and Broken Dulcet coming to an end at the same time I'm releasing Abyss of Dreams. It looks like that's what's going to happen. I had planned to take a month break between the end of the books and the beginning of the next, but I might have to extend that. We'll see how this all turns out, because pantser me doesn't know.

I'm also a little concerned. I was planning to do a paperback through Amazon, but the quality is not where it should be. It seems more and more authors I know are getting proofs or author copies from them that are water damaged/torn/bent/ etc. Then there was the incident where an author got her author copies and while the books had her cover, the interior was Mein Kampf. D:<
I'm looking at Book Vault and some other options. We'll see what happens.

The Chaser Chronicles will succeed the Jilvayna Chronicles starting with Book 5. Same characters, but the focus will switch since there's a lot to do as an empire collapses and falls--and chasers will be busy.

Last Sunday I was helping my honey cut down a tree our HOA hated, but that we and our neighbor had no problem with (they liked the shade, and the HOA said they didn't care). Carting branches tore my rotator cuff on my right arm--the arm I use to draw. It's been a week filled with pain, ice packs and heating pads (I'm allergic to ibuprofen, so the usual ways to get swelling to go down are not viable for me).
Beginning to think 2025 doesn't like me very much.
Anyway, special artworks and the like are on hold until I'm healed. I'll still be publishing chapters, but probably not much else (typing hurts). Evenacht Snake's Den hit 200K views (!) and I'll do something special for that, too, once I'm better (which can be weeks, I'm told D:).

I'll be publishing Greenglimmer next week as usual (Jan 24), then I'm flying to the far reaches of Star Valley, Wyoming, USA to visit my dad, who's in ill health. Internet access will be iffy, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to publish Broken Dulcet while I'm there; my family prefers the middle of nowhere. I grew up in the Narrows, an unincorporated area, and in Bedford (which had ~250 people back then, most belonging to 3 families).
I'll be flying into Salt Lake, then driving 3 1/2 hours to reach my brother's place. I'm out of practice driving on crappy roads, so not looking forward to that. It'll be strange to visit; I haven't been back since my early twenties. I found it soul-killing. While the landscape is beautiful (it's south of Jackson Hole and Yellowstone National Park, so has the same kind of alpine mountain scape), the people are not. I'll be happy to sit and keep Dad company, then flee back to a better place.

I'll be doing art in celebration, but I'm not certain when it'll get completed. My father was admitted to the hospital after suffering a silent heart attack, and he's not doing well. We'll see how this holiday season turns out.

They're about the e ada sindo from the Wellspring Dragons, a martial order of women in Rakan whose purpose is to bring justice to those who don't get it from official sources. Their failure to follow this tradition is an important part of the fourth book WIP, and will lead to unexpected consequences in book five.

Well, I spent a lot of this week on my Evenacht primer (and the rest editing my WIP), so most of Week 3's homework for WorldEmber isn't done yet. Here's a link to what I have finished so far.
I'm hoping to have it all done by the end of the weekend. I always promise I won't get behind, and as I'm falling further and further back, I wonder why my good intentions never seem to work. I always rush at the end.

My honey thinks I need to take more frequent breaks, so I'll be taking one at the end of December around Christmas. Looking forward, I want to put in two-week breaks four times a year, and a month between the end of a book and the beginning of the next one. Creative juices get ground down, and I think a healthier break schedule might help in this.

I don't have extras. I'm not in the a good headspace right now. It was hard to write a chapter meant to be soft and wonderful when seething rage and helplessness roared through me.
My honey and I grew up in rural America (Wyoming and Nebraska) and we know what's in store when Trump gets sworn in and they implement Project 2025. We know the hate that's been unleashed, and the numbers of people getting hurt and dying needlessly will increase. I'm donating to orgs like RAICES and the Trevor Project and the ACLU and hope we can keep the damage and death to a minimum, though right now, it feels pretty hopeless. I know how unsafe I feel as a woman. It's worse for LGBTQ+, minorities, non-Christians.
And no, I'm not overreacting. We know the kind of person who voted for Trump because we're related to them. My honey and I moved to California and cut all ties to toxic, abusive family. There isn't anywhere else to move to escape the hate that infuses them (my father told me during the pandemic he didn't care if I lived or died, all the same to him. And now people like him, who lack empathy, sympathy and basic human decency, will be back in power).
Y'all, take care. I'm going to have to, before I burst.

So I have my Spooktober article written. It's more dark than scary, but it fits. It still needs prettifying, and I still need to make the snippets for the prompts, but it's good for a read.
The Final Gauntlet is the trial Qira undertakes in the (NEW!) short story Falling Light. It's the final test for a Light-blessed, and if they succeed, they become the avatar of Light. That means, of course, it's a difficult and dangerous undertaking.

If you didn't catch it earlier, Oct. 20 was the 4th anniversary of Lapis of Nicodem! The first chapter of Lapis was the first ever serial chapter I'd written, so it was a milestone even in 2020.
Hopefully this gets me pumped to draw that portrait of Rin I've been meaning to create for the website. And maybe I'll get a khentauree drawn, too (I am not as good at combining horse/deer bodies with humanoid torsos as I am drawing portraits. They look funny).

New Short Story and a Book Anniversary!
So, my weekend went something like this: internet was funky so it took me thirty minutes to upload my Greenglimmer chapters on Friday. Had problems uploading the short story I planned to release along with the chapters, so waited until things seemed better.
Then my coffee decided it liked being inside my gaming keyboard rather than inside the mug. Eep. And since that was my desktop keyboard, I needed to do what I could to clean it and get another hooked up...fun times, y'all!
But I did get the short story up! Check it out here. It's relevant to the current happenings in my Evenacht serial. It's dark and moody, and is Qira's origin story.
Qira vowed to destroy the Light Temple, but he needs the Light Crown to do it--which means he needs to defeat Skerezahn the Immortal first.

To save my sanity, I deleted my Ghost Pirate University CSS and BBCode because something was wrong and I couldn't figure out what. I rewrote it and it's live and submitted to Institutions of Learning Challenge!
Pirate Captain Drowned Dough and lawful Lieutenant Trevel realize that tourists need training to have fun during sea battle re-enactments--so create Ghost Pirate University to teach them how to pirate.

My week was mostly spent on my challenge entry, and crying because something was wrong with the article and I couldn't figure out what. I saved the writing to a test article, deleted everything, and went from there.
I've officially started the 2nd edition edits of Ambercaast, which will basically consist of spellchecking again and breaking chapters into smaller chunks (my opinion on long chapters for serials has changed since I first started Ambercaast). Not certain when I'll get it done, since I also need to finish Abyss of Dreams, my Wellspring WIP that really, really needs to get finished.

While I still love the style, I'm going back to a less minimal look for my own work.

I am now on vacation for two weeks (except for reading the SC articles for the prompt I sponsored. I'm still doing that!). Greenglimmer will return on Sept 6, and Broken Dulcet will return on Sept 13. Maybe I should have waited and wrote about the spooky theater then. Ah well.
I haven't taken a break since Nov-Dec of 2023, when I took a month off before Greenglimmer and Broken Dulcet began. But after writing 50K during Summer Camp (counting articles and serial chapters but not CSS code) I am in need of a breather. So breathe I shall.
I will not be taking bets on how many days I can stay idle before I pick up a pen and make some digital art, or type a bit on my Wellspring WIP. I have too much of a guilty conscience. I'll probably put up my revamp of my Lapis of Nicodem homepage, but I won't do that until after SC judging because I'm terrified I'll accidentally update articles.
Who knows. Maybe I'll just kick back and play some more Tears of the Kingdom (my honey got me the 9 disc, full soundtrack to the game in Japan. Very excited to listen to it all). I am now on vacation for two weeks (except for reading the SC articles for the prompt I sponsored. I'm still doing that!). Greenglimmer will return on Sept 6, and Broken Dulcet will return on Sept 13. Maybe I should have waited and wrote about the spooky theater then. Ah well.
I haven't taken a break since Nov-Dec of 2023, when I took a month off before Greenglimmer and Broken Dulcet began. But after writing 50K during Summer Camp (counting articles and serial chapters but not CSS code) I am in need of a breather. So breathe I shall.
I will not be taking bets on how many days I can stay idle before I pick up a pen and make some digital art, or type a bit on my Wellspring WIP. I have too much of a guilty conscience. I'll probably put up my revamp of my Lapis of Nicodem homepage, but I won't do that until after SC judging because I'm terrified I'll accidentally update articles.
Who knows. Maybe I'll just kick back and play some more Tears of the Kingdom (my honey got me the 9 disc, full soundtrack to the game in Japan. Very excited to listen to it all). I don't have my Summer Camp Week 1 prep done yet because I'm working on my meta (my meta has spoilers so it's not available to the public. I'm making meta/primers that don't have them, and that's taking time).
Themes of change? Well, Broken Dulcet's "first night of the last night of the Dentherion Empire" definitely fits! The ending of an empire brings a lot of change, good and bad, with it.
I also am looking at Evenacht. A really big event is on the horizon, and I'm pretty certain it's going to happen in July--and it will change Vantra's viewpoint on a great many things.
Change in the real world has influenced my writing. Without the rise of generative AI and LLMs, I wouldn't be thinking of khentauree in the same way. What constitutes intelligence, and do they qualify? If Gedaavik's code changed them, did it change them enough to give them humanity? Or are they just following what an extraordinary code tells them to do?

I think I should write a scene where pollen attacks the main characters, because it sure can knock you flat and leave your head feeling three sizes too big for days. Is there a B-rate horror movie called Attack of the Pollen? There should be.
That's basically been my week.
I was going to start recording again (hahaha stuffy narrator is a no-go), influenced by fellow Anvilite MJ Keeler reading her book Blackbird Raven Crow and putting the chapters up on YouTube. I've been looking for a not-as-exploitative place to plunk my own recordings (not Audible or Spotify), and YouTube is as good as any (will probably try Bandcamp as well). I will aim to post something once a week, if I can get my energy back. I'm feeling swamped, like I have too much to do right now.
I hate planning things, then having life get in the way and crushing said plans into pulp. Fingers crossed I can get the artwork for Knavish Canto up soon.

I should have the rewrite of my Wellspring WIP done soon (I'm planning by the end of the month). Once I gave up on including all things from the previous version, the writing's gone smoother. Those scenes that didn't make it into the Abyss of Dreams will be in the next book (where, after the changes in book 3, they work better). There are times, this stuff is just hard.
And I found out that I have potential readers that are waiting for paperbacks of my series because they prefer that format to ebooks. Considering the cost of physical books right now, that surprised me. Maybe they won't be as enthusiastic when they realize how much I'll have to charge for those, just to get a dollar or two in profit.

I have done about 10K words on the Abyss of Dreams re-write this week (and deleted about the same). If you want to know where my time has gone, it's been into that. Will I make my Oct deadline? I hope, I hope.
I've also been enjoying Dragon's Dogma 2, and been disappointed in Endless Ocean. I loved the first two games, and how intimate, beautiful, and wondrous they were. This one is not that :(. There's something special about getting an up-close pic of a fish to file, that a long-shot scan that grabs a whole bunch of IDs misses. And the AI voice is awful. *sad tears*

What have I been doing this week? Re-linking my World Anvil images to my CSS code so they don't break upon server transfer. Yeah, this has taken a lot of time. Have I missed some? I bet I have. Fun times ahead, but since I'm revamping the book sites anyway, it's fine. I'll just say 'under construction' and call it good.
I also got a shiny new desktop that should speed up art/video/3D creation *fingers crossed*. I spent two days grumbling about how much I hate installing all my apps on a new machine. Some companies make this difficult because they want you to buy another license, rather than keep the current one (DaVinci Resolve, ClipStudioPaint). Frustration is not what I want to feel upon getting a shiny new desktop.

What am I stoked for this week? The new Endless Ocean game. I loved the first two because I got to take pics of sealife and plants and coral. And I'll be happy when A Thousand Year Door revamp makes it to the Switch.
I was also reminded this week about how US marines duped an AI meant to track human movement by hiding under a cardboard box Solid Snake style and creeping up on it. It's not just in video games, y'all!

I plan to write a short story for Adventure April. I still haven't decided what yet, and the month's nearly half over! Think think think...
So a lot of work on my art/videos have slowed to a crawl because Adobe products are complaining I don't have enough cache available to run them (this is before I even open a file). I cleared space over the amounts I chose in the settings, and they still complain. So it's been a back-and-forth between other apps, which, again, kinda slows down work. There are other annoyances with my desktop, like constant game crashes, so I'm wondering if there's something amiss with the computer. I know some more recent Windows updates haven't been kind to certain PCs, but reinstalling previous updates hasn't changed things. And yes, I pay for a virus etc checker to keep my comp clean.
So creating the covers for the paperback versions of my Wellspring Dragons has not gone as planned. I'm taking the "all things in time" approach. It all will happen when it happens.

So starting in Dec 2022, I had some health issues that did not get an antibiotic fix until April 2023 (because US healthcare sucks). I got behind on things I wanted to do, and some got shoved to the side or placed on the back burner to simmer a bit.
One of those back burner things was creating audiobooks of my stories. I was already feeling a bit bogged down with it, and uncertain how to continue. But a friend of mine has been recording her first book, chapter by chapter, and uploading the readings to YouTube. I know several authors who record snippets from their books to share on social media. This may be the way to go; recording and releasing a chapter at a time. Dividing the reading into smaller chunks may make it easier to finish because there will be definable milestones along the way.
I suppose the next question would be, should I film myself reading, or have an animated screen.
I also think it would be nice, to finish recording my award-winning articles.

So perhaps a change, to Liminal Shadows for book one, and Shades of Treachery for book two--more dark fantasy-like, I think.

I live again!
After spending all new years and some change sick I didn't get a ton of completely new writing done. mostly have been tweaking and expanding articles.
Got my new years resolution article done at lest.

My articles and resolutions. I haven't quite gotten all ten completed, but they will be added by the end of the day (I decided not to include Organization articles, which I'm judging, and which has taken up a lot of my time reading).
I also wrote an achievements article. I needed to remind myself that, while I didn't accomplish everything I wanted to in 2023, I did quite a lot. For instance, I wrote 108,117 on Knavish Canto and 117,855 on Snake's Den, the (just finished) volumes in my Manuscript serials, and I created over 100 artworks. There's more, too!

Slid in to over 10k just before the lock.
Despite everything that has been going on this month for me, and the cherry on top, getting and still dealing the flu 2 days before the deadline, I made it.
Completely rewrote and expanded. The Leodora Exploration Society.
Two stupid impractical weapons.
And finally, this wall of text, that still needs a ton of work to make it readable and interesting. but by God, I was hitting that goal.
Okay, time to go back into a NyQuil coma, and see everyone in 2024.

So, the penultimate x 2 chapter for Knavish Canto just went live. Nov 24 will be the last chapter, I'll take a month-long break, and Broken Dulcet will start on Dec 22.
In Broken Dulcet, fears become reality; aquatheerdaal runs out. The tech the Dentherion Empire has relied on to remain in power stops working, and so does its hold on puppet states. It's a time of flux, one numerous rebellions have waited for, but who has the capability of taking advantage? Desperate times usher in dangers, and Lapis must rely on her skills developed while chasing to keep those she knows and cares for safe.
Plenty of adventure and surprises coming your way, in Broken Dulcet!

Am I sad Knavish Canto is coming to an end? Yes. But I'm also eager for Broken Dulcet to start.
The month break will help with WorldEmber prep/participation. And recharging is not a bad thing. Check out my homework here. I will be changing the page design a little: I love the green box. I don't like the purple-pink one. But it may be, the green is too bright. I am fickle, what can I say.
Maybe that's why I'm going to change the Greenglimmer cover a bit. I think it needs to be darker, more mysterious.

Knavish Canto is drawing to a close! Two more chapters, all! I'll be taking a month off, then starting Broken Dulcet. The timeline should go as follows:
November 10 and 24: final chapters
Break
December 22: Start of Broken Dulcet
Just in time for the holidays, and the first chapters will not be holiday-ish in the least. Ah well.
In Broken Dulcet, the dwindling supply of aquatheerdaal finally hits its productive end. Since aquatheerdaal powers known tech, how are governments, corporations, institutions, people, going to respond? How will it affect the Dentherion Empire countries, whose puppet rulers maintained power using tech, while they denied their citizens access to it?
How far will the desperate go, to find an alternative power source? What if one exists, but is held in the hands of a crime syndicate?
There's that, and much more, going on in Broken Dulcet, and Lapis and company will be in the middle of it.
